Lesson learned...

Always, always give washing instructions with handwoven gifts! The burgundy and brown wool scarf shown here was, with the best of intentions, thrown into a washing machine. It's small and stiff now. I guess there's always next year...

Oh no! I did that myself to a pair of my handspun knitted socks which I picked up in the wrong laundry load (I now have very tight-fitting slippers). Not sure what I'd have said if someone else had done it - I hope I would have managed to bite my tongue, but I can't be sure. At least the scarf must have been worn if it needed a wash already, and that's the sign of a good gift.

If I had done something like that to a handmade gift (perish the thought!) I would certainly have been too chagrinned to tell the giver. I'd have poked it in the back of a deep, dark drawer in shame.

I guess knowing about it does some good, as you say, for saving future scarves from the washing machine.

Best luck!

How heartbreaking. Plain and simple.

Is there enough there to cut into as fabric, and sew up a pair of mittens, or a bag? Re-create?
